Gene Chandlerは、1937年7月6日イリノイ州シカゴ生まれ。
1955年に、Gaytones、1957年に、Dukaysを結成し、1961年に、Big Lie/The Girl’s A Devil（Nat 4001）でレコードデビュー。1962年にDuke of Earlをヒットさせる。同曲を含むLP「the Duke of Earl」をリリースする(Vee Jay 1040)。
同年、更に、You Threw a Lucky Punchをリリースし、1963年以降はRoulette, Constellation, Checker, Brunswickに録音を続ける。
Checkerレーベルでは、LP「the Duke of Soul」（Checker LP-3003）をリリースする。Constellationでは、LP「Just Be True」（Constellation 1423）をリリースする。
1967年に、Brunswickに移籍、更に、Mercuryに移籍。
1980年代に入ってからは、80（Chi-Sound）、Here’s to Love（Chi-Sound 629）をリリースする。
