<p>O’jaysは、1958年に結成されたTeiumphsを前身とし、その後Mascotsと改名し、The Mascotsは、King Labelに(Do the)Wiggle、Story of my heart、Lonely rain、It’s a Miracle、That’s the way I feel、I can’t take itの6曲を残している。その内の幾つかはDoo-wop系コンピレーションで聴いたことがあるが、Lonly rainは、ピアノのビートがアーリーソウル的なGood rockin’なナンバー、Do the Wiggleは60年頃流行したリズムのダンス曲、Story of my heatはDoo-wop バラード、It’s a Miracleは、ソウルの萌芽を感じさせる曲となっている。
1960年にO’jaysと改名し、インペリアルに移籍する。Lonely Drifterをはじめ50年代R&Bのエッセンスを残したアーリーソウルとなっている1963年から1965年頃の作品は、Comin’ through(Imperial 9290)に収録されている。続いて、MinitにWorkin’ on your case、Stand in for loveといった曲を録音し、アルバム「Soul sound」（Minit 40008)を残している。Imperial/Minit期の作品を未発表3曲を含めて纏めたWorkingon your caseというアルバムもある（Stateside 26-0482)。
1967年になってニューヨークで、George Kerrプロデュースのアルバム「Back on top」（Bell 6014）を発表し、I’ll be sweeter than tomorrow、Look over your shoulderといったソウルバラードが収録されている。1969年になって、フィラデルフィアでKeneeth Gamble、Leon Huffの設立したNeptune Labelにアルバム「In Philadelphia」を発表する。その後、オハイオに戻ってH.Bバーナムプロデュースにより、Super bad（Little starr 1000)を発表する。1974年には企画盤「O’jays Meet The Moments」（Stang 1024)が作られ、O’Jaysの作品6曲の内、George Kerrのプロデュース曲が5曲で、1曲はIn Philadedelphiaにも収録されている。
フィラデルフィアインター時代には、1972年にR&Bチャート1位を記録したBack Stabbers(Philadelphia Intenational KZ-31712:写真）を発表する。代表作の一つである同アルバムには、陰鬱なサウンドに、切れのあるシャウト、厚みのあるコーラス、ユニゾンのWhat They Doが絡むタイトル曲、懐かしい60年代の南部のディープサウンドに曲に揺れるには持って来いのコーラスが絡むSunshine、FunkyなフィリーサウンドのLove Trainを含む。
その後もShip Ahoy、Survial、My favorite person、Love me touch me、Emotionally yours、Love you to tearsといった作品を発表し続けている。</p>
