Jackie Wilsonは、1934年6月9日ミシガン州デトロイト生まれ。1984年1月21日に亡くなっている。Michael JacksonのMoon Walkの始祖として知られる。
1952年、Sonny Wilsonの名で、Rainy Day Blues/Rockaway Rock（Dee Gee 400）でデビュー。1953年、Billy Ward & the Dominoesのメンバーとして、Where Now Little Heart/You can’t Keep A Good Man Down（Federal 12139）をリリース。
1957年、ソロとして、Reet Petite/By the Light of Silvery Moon（Brunswick 55024）をリリース。1958年、Lonely TeardoropsがR＆Bチャート1位を記録。Berry Gordy作曲の2曲は、モータウンサウンドの基礎となる。
1958年には、He’s So Fineがヒット。
Doggin Around、A Woman,A Lover, A Friendのようなブルースバラードも歌う。KnightもR&;Bチャートの3位となる。
1963年、Baby WorkoutがR&Bチャートの1位を記録し、アルバム、Baby Workoutが制作される（Brunswick BL-54110）。
1967年に、Higher and higherがR&Bチャートの1位になる。
Billy Ward & His Dominos在籍時のものも含め、King、Brunswickで合計31枚のアルバムを出している。
LP初収録の曲も含めたJackie Wilson Story（Epic 38623）もある。
