1950年代後半、Winfred Lavet, Richard Taylorが、The Statemenを結成するが、録音は無し。
1960年、新たにメンバーを加え、Dorsetsを結成。1961年に、Pork Chops/Cool It（Asens 101）を初録音。
Potk chopsは、コーラスの中に、I only have eyes for youに通じるリフレイン、Jackie wilson「Sp much」で使われるリップトリルを駆使したメリスマ唱法を採り入れている。
1962年、Manhattansに改名。1962年から1964年にかけて、Pinny,Avanti,Enjoyに録音。1964年から、Carvivalに録音を開始する。
Carnival期には、先ず、Dedicated to YouというLPをリリース（Carnival 201）。続いて、Sings for You and Yours（Carnival 202）をリリース。
デラックス期には、先ず、With Those Hands（De Luxe 12000）をリリース。同アルバムには、George Kerrがプロデュースした曲が2曲含まれている。このアルバムまでは、George Smithがリードを務めている。
続いて、A Million to One（同12004）をリリースする。このアルバムから、Gerald Alstonがリードを務めている。
1973年からは、Columbiaに録音を開始する。
1976年には、Kiss and Say Goodbyeを含む、Bobby Martin、Bert DeCoteaux制作のThe Manhattans（Columbia PC-33820）をリリース。
1986年には、アルバム、Back to Basis（Columbia 40300）をリリース。
1988年には、Gerald Alsonが脱退し独立する。
