Aretha Franklinは、1942年3月25日メンフィス生まれ。
1956年に、JVBに、Never Grow Old/You Grow Closer(JVB 47）で録音を開始する。
1959年に、Precious Lord（Pt1）/Precious Lord（Pt2）を録音する（JVB 75）。
JVB、Checkerレーベルでの作品は、Precious Lord（PLP-841/842）で聴くことができる。
1960年にColumbia入り。Today I Sing The Blues/Love Is The Only Thing(Columbia 41793）を録音する。1961年に初LP「Aretha,With Ray Bryant Combo」を発表する。
Columbiaでは、7枚のLPを残している。
1966年には、アルバムSoul Sister（Columbia CS-9321)をリリース。
1967年にAtlanticと契約。
同年、アルバム「I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You」（Atlantic SD-8139）をリリース。
その後、Arrives（同8150）、Lady Soul（同8176）、Aretha Now（同8186）、Young, Gifted And Black（同7213）、Amazing Grace（同2－906）、Sparkle（同18176）といったLPをリリース。
1980年代に入って、Aristaに移籍。Aristaでは、1982年のJump to It（Arista AL-9602）といったLPを残す。
