ナッシュヴィルR&Bのレジェンド Freddie Waters
隠れた名シンガーの一人として挙げられるのが、惜しくも2000年8月23日に亡くなってしまったのであるが、Freddie Watersである。
フレディーウォーターズは、1942年生まれのナッシュヴィルのシンガーで、1965年にThe Hytonesというヴォーカルグループで、A-Betレーベルで「I’ve got my baby/Bigger and betterでデビューし、同曲は、Bigger and betterというコンピレーションCDで聴くことができる。
Hy-Tonesは、I’m A Fool/Chinese Booie（Hy-Tone 120）、You Don’t Even Know My Name/Till You Break Up（Southern Artists 2023=Bell 627)というシングルをリリースしている。
続いて、Ref-O-Ree,Curtom,staxからシングルを発表。
フレディウォーターズの曲が聴けるＣＤは、他に、「Ｍｕｓｉｃ city soul」、「Ｓinging a new song」、「One step closer to the Blues」「Curtom story」がある。Singing A New Songは、後述のThe Sun is Always Shiningの基礎となったとも言える曲。
「Music city soul」に収録されたEddie Frisonとのユニット「Nobdys Know」は、Ｊ．Ｂの「Try me」をモダンに洗練したような曲で気に入っている。
その後、1977年、I’m afraid to let you into my lifeをOctober labelから発表し、ソウルチャート62位まで上昇している。
Octoberからは、同曲を収録した「Just enough to get me cool」というアルバムを発表している。
同アルバムは、Freddie Waters唯一のアルバムにして、ローカルのインディレーベルから発売されたこともあり、オリジナルアルバムは、U.S.Black Disk Guide掲載の959枚の中でも最も困難、究極のLPコレクションのコーナーの半数より入手困難なLPであった。オリジナルどころか、TimelessからのRe-issue盤も入手するのが困難であった。
アイムアフレイド以外では、Ｔwistin’ the Night awayの頃のサムクックを思わせるような曲調の「The sun is always shining」も好きな曲である。後、好きなのが、後述のB(1)。
同アルバムには、ディスコサウンドのA(1)、B(5)、ディープに歌い込まれた、MalacoサウンドとBilly Prestonを足して割ったのようなミディアムテンポのFunkであるB(1)といった曲が含まれる。オートワウをかけたギターに、鍵盤を潰すように弾いて軋ませたピアノが入れ食いするA(4)もある。
80年代に入っても、Kari, T-Jay,からシングルを発表し続けた後、90年代に入って一時音楽業界から離れていたようである。Steel It Steersなどは、疾走感溢れるナンバーで、フィラデルフィア辺りのソウルを聴いているかようである。
